fortyfivedownstairs is inviting proposals for exhibitions in 2027. Located at 45 Flinders Lane in Melbourne CBD, the organisation features two distinctive exhibition spaces: the Small Gallery and the Large Gallery.
Proposals are welcome from artists and curators working across a broad range of contemporary art practices, including painting, photography, installation, video and interdisciplinary work.
Applications can be submitted by individual artists or for group exhibitions centred around a shared theme, idea or collective practice.
The Large Gallery is a generous, open-plan space with two structural pillars positioned centrally within the room. The Small Gallery is also open plan, with a single central pillar. Both galleries feature white-painted brick and plasterboard walls, white pressed-metal ceilings and hardwood floors with a waxed finish.
Exhibition periods of either two or four weeks are available. Exhibitions are selected through a proposal-based curatorial process, with programming decisions based on the strength of the proposal and its fit within the annual exhibition program.
The exhibition calendar is programmed on a rolling basis, so artists are encouraged to apply early if they have preferred exhibition dates in mind.
