WHEN : 4th October, 5:30 – 9:00pm
WHERE : Metro Arts
In the Studio, join EXIST ARI’S Bec Cunningham and New York artist Barbara Rosenthal in one of her few appearances in Australia. Metro Arts is very excited to host this senior international artist whose works are held at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Tate Britain Library. Barbara will be joined by Bonnie Hart (artist), Dhana Merrit (IMA gallery manager, artist), and Courtney Pedersen (QUT, Fine Arts Lecturer) to discuss journalling and diary-keeping and how they influence artists’ practices.
Work in Residence artist, Liesel Zink shares material from her developing work, The Psychology Project. Working with a group of performers to generate a new movement-based work around scientific theories of ‘emergence’ – the way that systems and patterns of behaviour arise – Liesel shares new fragments to challenge and extend her work.
Jennifer Bismire shares the results of a first-stage development of Paper Dolls; colliding design, puppetry, and performance to create oversize paper dolls, grappling with a three-dimensional world.
Experience sound art performances by Bad Intentions, and Feet Teeth in the Gallery. Bad Intentions are a punk/improve/noise duo. Valuing each other’s creative input, they come together to battle misunderstandings, hospitalisation, police calls and homelessness
Brisbane-based trio, Feet Teeth use live processing and improvising that draws on jazz, minimalism and noise traditions. Featuring trumpet, drums, marimba, Commodore 64, and electronics, Feet Teeth can be described as digitally mangled, electro-acoustic free-jazz.
Daniel Flood and Emma Che Martin present a showing following a three-week creative development of Billy the Lawyer and Benny the Clown, a story of two brothers and their mother as they deal with the repercussions of an act of violence twenty-five years ago. The work shifts between expressionism, naturalism and hyper-realism, incorporating media and sound to tell a darkly comedic, tragic story. This is Daniel and Emma Che’s first collaboration on a narrative work. Billy the Lawyer and Benny the Clown is Takeover#4 for 2013. Tickets for a 7pm showing are at $10 each.
