The City of Gold Coast is searching for an artist to deliver iconic gateways to the Gold Coast that are as visually bold, expressive and memorable as the city itself.
The major public artwork will “bookend” the city. Due for installation before the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, this is the latest instalment of arts and culture projects underway across the city.
The design competition is open worldwide. The two gateways to the city are located in high traffic zones. In the north, on the M1 Pacific Motorway, immediately south of the Albert River – the boundary of the city. The available site area is 750 metres long, 2 metres wide at the base with a maximum height and top width of 11 metres. Around 155,000 commuters will see this marker every day.
An external panel will select up to five finalists and invite them to further develop the designs. The panel, a cross section of industry and stakeholder representatives, will select the winning entry. Final installation is expected in November 2017.
The Gateway Public Art Commission is co-funded by the Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast.
