An exploration of the painting process, On Painting, draws together new paintings that investigate the working methods of some the world’s artistic greats, including Velázquez and Sargent.

“In 1435 the Italian architect and art theorist Leon Battista Alberti published his pioneering treatise on the theory and practice of art called ‘Della Pittura’ (On Painting). It was the first modern analytical study of painting, and a sort of ‘how to’ guide to be a successful artist. For me, painting is still very much an analytical process, and one that remains the most fascinating, perplexing and frustrating pursuit I know. I am continuously struggling with the physicality of paint, and with this body of work, have launched my own investigation into the history and development of painting.”

Maestri has exhibited nationally and won numerous awards, including the 2009 Archibald Prize. His work is held in significant public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, Macquarie Bank, Artbank, Art Gallery of South Australia and Parliament House, Canberra.
