Hannah Seong and Lois Kim: Nunchi

Deadline:

29 July
-
August 9
Grey Street Gallery, QCA

Nunchi is a duo exhibition by Hannah Seong and Lois Kim that transforms Grey Street Gallery into a metaphorical Asian-Australian household. Taking its name from the Korean concept of nunchi—the subtle art of sensing and responding to unspoken cues—the exhibition invites viewers to move through the space using this culturally specific mode of perception.

Through the architecture of the home, Nunchi explores the emotional scaffolding of diaspora. The front gallery presents a carefully composed façade, echoing the idealised image of the Asian home, while the inner space exposes the invisible labour, fragility, and adaptability that sustain it. The exhibition asks visitors to practise nunchi themselves—reading the room and attuning to what is quietly implied rather than overtly stated.

This compelling installation challenges surface impressions, implicating the viewer in a more attentive and culturally nuanced form of observation.
