How long have you been feeling unwell is an urgently-paced video installation that uses found footage to dissect and reframe the representation of illness in popular culture.

Often, the ill body acts as a commodity for observation, entertainment and curiosity. Via the cut of the edit, this work exposes and lacerates the cultural centralisation and celebration of able-bodied protagonists that animates the source media and the hierarchy of ability that it perpetuates.

Amanda Bennetts is a Meanjin/Brisbane and Noosa photo-media, installation and moving image artist. Bennetts is soon to graduate from the Queensland College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Her work is influenced by the human body and explores human themes, including fragility, the self and the medical encounter, drawing from her own knowledge and experience.

Bennetts’ practice is process-driven. She engages with materiality, often using found scientific and medical apparatus. Bennetts incorporates medical imagery to investigate the lived experience and representation of the ill and medicalised body.
