Unmaking with Jessie French – Artist Demonstration
In this artist demonstration with Jessie French, learn about the process of unmaking algae-based bioplastic – a biodegradable material featured in her work ‘The Myth of Nature – agaG1 (V2)’ (2022). French’s algae-based polymer is made of Athrospira platensis microalgae – the first organisms to have produced oxygen on Earth and which still produce 50–80% of the world’s oxygen.
It can be completely recycled through a simple process, allowing the material to be 100% reused without the need for a high-energy recycling system. If disposed of in the environment, the organic polymer biodegrades without risking the lives of other species.
French’s work is included in Maluw Adhil Urngu Padanu Mamuy Moesik (Legends from the deep sitting peacefully on the waters) – Selected works from the 23rd Biennale of Sydney: rīvus. Anchored by a new commission from the Torres Strait 8, this exhibition explores how our connections to the natural world might decentre the human, prioritise care for Country, and pursue justice in an epoch of rising temperatures and seas.
