‘Immediacy’ is a response to the social and artistic state of emergency that is Queensland – a condition courtesy of the current state government’s decimation of social services and arts infrastructure. Artists are no strangers to such a climate and for their critical art practices to go from being fashionably interesting to unimportant or even unacceptable. Fortunately, artists aren’t in it for approval. These video works manage to cut through this context of obfuscation and occlusion. The immediate expressions of these nine local artists explore a politics of social and aesthetic disruption.
