‘In This Unfolding’ represents neural form and states of consciousness through delicate fine silver and gold jewellery alongside intricate sterling silver sculptures. The theme of our changing nervous system from birth through to ageing is explored through reflections of floral and animal anatomy. These complex organic creations simultaneously allow us to examine our impermanence and shared connection with all living things.
An exhibition for the new collection and sculptural works will hosted by Griffith University Queensland College of Art on May 6 – 30, 2015 in the Project Gallery. The opening night will be held on Friday 8th of May, 6 – 8pm.
BIO:
Luke Maninov is an artist and imaging scientist based in Brisbane, Australia. His practice examines the shared features that define the living and the organic and is heavily influenced by his continuing work in the fields of biomedical imaging and neuroscience. Through reimagining natural form and studying comparative structures his carefully constructed jewellery and small objects explore themes of impermanence and the connection between all living things. Currently, Luke’s work is focused on representing neural form and states of consciousness as the brain changes from birth through to death using reflections of floral and animal anatomy.
First graduating in neuroscience and psychology he combined a love of photography with microimaging to study cellular activity related to disease response and cancer through digital film – co-authoring several papers and a patent for potential disease treatment in this time. This led into research studying biological rhythms including interhermispheric switching, neural rhythms that vary between individuals and influence perception and consciousness. After taking some time away from research to study design Luke returned to neuroscience. He now manages a leading neuroscientific microimaging facility where he works alongside researchers studying consciousness, sleep, Alzheimer’s disease and Schizophrenia. Here he teaches and develops new methods for imaging neurons and brain tissue along with novel ways of exploring the beautiful images captured using these techniques.
Luke’s background and experience in the study of anatomy, physiology, design, photography and jewellery fabrication allow him to translate science and nature into unique sculpture and wearable art.
Since the launch of his first collections, Efflorescence and Symmetria in 2012, he has received an Exhibition Development Award (QCA/Flying Arts), an Australian RAW designer award and shown work in Australia and Japan.
