Jane Burton was born in Brisbane, Queensland in 1966. After moving with her family to Tasmania in 1980s, Burton attended the Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart where in 1991 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and in 1993 received an Honorary Research Associate.

Burton’s first solo exhibition, The Sweetest Path, was held in 1991 with Contemporary Art Services Tasmania in Hobart, and travelled to the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne. In that same year her work was curated in the exhibition Lust, Plimsoll Gallery, Centre for the Arts, University of Tasmania. Further solo exhibitions have been held with Dickerson Gallery, Sydney and Melbourne (2000, ’01,’03,’04 and ’05); Crossley & Scott, Melbourne (2002); Bett Gallery, Hobart (2004). In 2005 Burton held a solo exhibition entitled I did it for youwith the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne. Since 2007 Jane has had two solo exhibitions with Heiser Gallery and the artist is currently on show at the Gippsland Art Gallery in Sale, Victoria.

Selected group exhibitions Burton’s work has been curated in include Incorporeal 4: Scourge Time, Plimsoll Gallery, Centre for the Arts, University of Tasmania (1994); Colonial Past-time to Contemporary Profession: 150 Years of Australian Women’s Art, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart (1995); Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, Art Gallery of South Australia (1998); Private Parts, Monash University Gallery, Melbourne (1998); Moral Hallucination: Channelling Hitchcock, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2000); Between Place and Non-Place, Victorian College of The Arts Gallery, Melbourne (2001); Anxious Bodies, Art Gallery of New South Wales (2003); Good Looking: Narrative Photographs Past and Present, The Ian Potter Centre, National Gallery of Victoria (2003); Light Sensitive – Contemporary Australian Photography from The Loti Smorgon Fund, The Ian Potter Centre, National Gallery of Victoria (2006); The Last Thing I Remember…Jane Burton, Lily Hibberd, Bre Trenerry, Switchback Gallery, Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University, Victoria (2006) and University Art Gallery, The University of Sydney (2007).

In 1993 the artist was awarded the Lloyd Rees Traveling Scholarship and Residency, Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris. In 2003 Burton received an Arts Victoria Development Grant, and in 2005 an Australia Council Residency, London Studio. In 2009 the artist received residency at The Art Vault, Mildura. Earlier this year, Burton won the Best Experimental Film Award at the 2011 Three Minute Film Festival, Indiana, USA.

The artist’s work is represented in several institutional collections including the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart, Artbank, National Gallery of Victoria, Newcastle Region Art Gallery, and the Monash Gallery of Art, Victoria.
