QCA Project Gallery

In Undermining Landscape, Jennifer Sanzaro-Nishimura examines the Australian landscape and the effects of mining from two different perspectives – the physical changes in the landscape predominantly caused by open cut mining and the toxic effects of the chemicals (used in the mining process) and the minerals/materials extracted – on the environment and groundwater systems, especially in the dry, remote inland regions.

Jennifer’s work investigates the visual effects of mining on the Australian landscape, in particular open cut mining and the devastating changes that it has impinged on the pastoral, farming and regional areas, not to mention the Traditional Land owners. She questions the Australian government’s mentality of ‘mining at all costs’ and our economy reliant on income derived from mining our natural resources. The effects on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders land rights, flora, fauna and climate change are evident, yet politically it is a minefield of deceptive reports and media coverage.
