Laura Patterson: Ghosts

Deadline:

24 June
-
July 12
Jan Murphy Gallery

In Ghosts, Brisbane-based artist Laura Patterson explores the unseen energies and atmospheric presence within the landscape. Through intuitive gestures, delicate detail, and layers of paint, Patterson captures both the visible and intangible spirit of place.

Many works in this exhibition were created during a 2024 residency at the Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart, awarded through the Hadley’s Art Prize. Inspired by the misty forests of Mt Field National Park and the Maydena Ranges, Patterson’s paintings convey a sense of awe, memory, and emotional resonance. The title Ghosts reflects both the eerie qualities of the forest and the act of conjuring presence through painterly mark-making.

Patterson holds a Masters of Architecture from the University of Queensland. Her work has received numerous accolades including the Milburn Art Prize (2019), Highly Commended at the Glover Prize (2020), and the Hadley’s Art Prize Residency (2024).
