Lee Wilkes: Low Pressure (Closing In)

9th September - 3rd October

Jan Manton Art

We often forget that our natural world exists in an endless state of evolution and transformation. While human beings are also a creation of the natural world, we tend to exude an arrogant superiority over our environment. That is, until we encounter nature’s true and unpredictable power.

As Queenslanders, we are repeatedly reminded of nature’s overwhelming beauty and punishing authority, particularly during the summer months. In November of 2014 an unprecedented superstorm hit South Brisbane. This extraordinary and unforeseen storm cell caused severe damage to thousands of homes with many yet to be repaired, over ten months later.

With the subject of this series being one of the most recognisable features of the Queenslander home, the work documents a journey through the contrasting beauty and dramatic ferocity of summer in South East Queensland.
