In life drawing, artists have employed a number of techniques to both disrupt academic convention and implicate the body of the artist directly in the production of the work.
Mirrors are weird and misunderstood. They carry the weight of self-surveillance, examination and vanity; and they are loaded with doubling, deception and illusion. The history of pictures is littered with mirrors. And, most often, caught in the middle of these eccentric pictures are naked bodies. To further expand and complicate mirrored bodies, masquerade will be used to reflect and deflect conventional associations with beauty and idealism.
This masterclass will employ mirrors and masks in a deep engagement with the history and idiosyncrasy of life drawing. Participants will also learn a specialized technique called ‘scumbling’ which is often mischaracterized and misrepresented in drawing.
