Deadline:

In Marcus Boelen’s second solo show with the gallery, the artist will present seven new paintings made with his signature energy and ‘savage’ gusto.

While the paintings draw compositional inspiration from the landscape, Marcus works to deconstruct the reference by rotating the canvases and coating the surfaces in a gritty, plastic colour palette. Boelen strikes each painting in an improvised frenzy of mark making, fusing drawing with painting in a manner that is both aggressive and sensitive. He pounds the canvas with his materials, re-working the surface and composition in response to each creative decision. Assertive yet resigned, each painting exposes a truth about process, invention and the relationship between intention and chance.
