Momentum to Moments: In Pursuit of Mastery presents the work of London-born Australian artist Rich Allen, who works under the name RWAllenArtworks.
A graduate of the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London, majoring in drawing and painting, Allen returned to his fine art practice in 2008 following a career in teaching and commercial design. Since then, his work has centred on a disciplined and process-driven approach to image-making.
Working primarily in pencil and watercolour on 638gsm cold press paper, Allen’s practice is measured, organised, and meticulously recorded. His long-standing thematic focus is ‘intimism’ — the capture of fleeting moments through careful observation and repetition.
Rather than pursuing a grand conceptual statement, Allen describes his work as a structured journey guided by three cornerstones: plan – perform – persist. Progress unfolds slowly across plateaus of practice, punctuated by brief spells of advancement. For Allen, mastery is not a final destination but a continual engagement with process — a sustained commitment to the “middle bit” of making.
The exhibition includes works such as Sahara Spirit, Celestine Design Two, Momentum to Moment I–III, Jana Moment, Duet – Twin Flight, Octagana Soleste I & II, Magenta Spirit, and A Pinnacle Moment II, each reflecting the artist’s sustained pursuit of refinement, clarity, and visual balance.
Drawing inspiration from George Leonard’s philosophy of mastery — the idea that what is initially difficult becomes progressively easier and more pleasurable through practice — Allen’s work embodies patience, discipline, and devotion to craft.
