Natalya Hughes: The Future was Femme

Deadline:

12 November
-
November 29
Milani Gallery

In gallery two is The Future was Femme by Natalya Hughes. For this body of work, Hughes quotes Russian-born French artist and designer Erté (Romain de Tirtoff, 1892–1990), whose androgynous images held allusions to aesthetic transgression. Hughes dissects the images, leaving abstracted associations of the feminine, the body and excess.

About the Artist
Natalya Hughes (b. 1978) is a Brisbane-based artist whose practice spans painting, installation, textiles and sculpture. Her work often interrogates representations of femininity in art history, psychology and popular culture. Hughes completed her PhD at Griffith University and has exhibited widely across Australia, including at the Museum of Brisbane, Artspace, and national institutions. She is known for her maximalist aesthetics, layered patterning and feminist inquiry.
