NETHERWORLDS: NAOMI BLACKLOCK, ANASTASIA BOOTH, CAITLIN FRANZMANN, CHANTAL FRASER, CLAY KERRIGAN, & BLAKE LAWRENCE
NETHERWORLDS brings together the work of six artists, exploring the relationship between magic, mysticism, and artmaking. Drawing on ideas of communitas and of perceived and actual power, NETHERWORLDS presents overlapping and intersecting spaces for queer spiritualities, feminist mythologies, personalised cultural ritual, and new ways to imagine the world.
Driven by a commitment to reinvention and reinvigoration, with new and recurring works in shifting formations, NETHERWORLDS comes to Brisbane. This will be the project’s culmination – filling the historic Spring Hill Reservoir with new performances and installations that invoke a pantheon of queer, femme, and diverse powers and possibilities.
Spanning October 2016 to June 2018, NETHERWORLDS has been presented at Firstdraft Gallery (Sydney), The Walls (Gold Coast) and Seventh Gallery (Melbourne) – with an additional new work for Bus Projects (Melbourne). McCarthy-Swann Projects are proud to present a new incarnation of the NETHERWORLDS project, with recurring, evolved, and new works – for this, its fifth and final iteration.
NETHERWORLDS is presented with the support of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. The Brisbane exhibition is supported by Backbone Youth Arts. NETHERWORLDS was conceived and initially presented with the support of Firstdraft Gallery and the National Association of Visual Arts (NAVA)
