This exhibition draws on the multisensory encounter Pamela Travers had with the surroundings in her early childhood in Queensland forming the significant elements of folkloric figure Mary Poppins. The exhibition title, taken from the biography of the same name, considers Pamela’s escape into the fear and excitement of the huge Allora Sky as a prominent moment in her creative development. A muse once referring to her as an, ‘erratic comet’, author PL Travers’ loyalty to an individual perception of ever changing terrain gave sovereignty to her writing. The resistance to Disney’s romanitcisation of her ‘flying nanny’ is explored by four Brisbane based printmakers, who, through mark making and lithographic processes rediscover a Taoist influence on the language of a mysterious writer, actress and mother.
