Metro Arts

‘palimpsest’ is a cross-institutional, grass-roots, student-run exhibition. It aims to relay the interlaying effects of time, history, place, and experience.

The exhibition considers the archaeological term “palimpsest,” meaning “something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form.” This commonly refers to a manuscript which has been erased and reused. In this context it relates to artworks being a “multilayered record” of history, constantly being effaced and reworked.

With this framework, palimpsest creates an environment to understand the artist, and art as a complex accumulation of layers, revealing embedded and imbued traces of its past conceptions of history. The term’s potential is ambiguous and left purposely open, posing many questions. We simply aim to challenge artists to respond to the palimpsest and pursue traces of space.

Join us on April 13th at Metro Arts for the one-night-only event.

Festivities will begin with a panel discussion with artists and student-curators, with food and drink served from 6pm onwards.

As a collaboration between UQ Society of Fine Arts (SoFA) and QUT’s Post Datum, SoFA members are encouraged to submit pieces of their writing in response to ‘palimpsest’ for an independently published zine. There will be a submission box present on the night for immediate responses, and further e-communication for those wishing to submit longer pieces such as essays, articles or reviews. Prizes will be available for those submitting to palimpsest, the zine.

SoFA is also calling for UQ students who are able to join the SoFA Media Development Team to assist in promotional videography content production.

For any more information regarding SoFA member participation, get in contact with us via our Facebook page, or our email uq.sofa@gmail.com
Please RSVP via eventbrite to help us with catering needs.
