Peta St Baker: Quiet Conversations

Deadline:

ArtSpace Teneriffe

Quiet Conversations is a body of work by Peta St Baker that honours the depth, dignity and emotional presence of Ethiopia’s tribal communities.

Through intimate portraiture, the images move beyond surface aesthetics to reveal moments of trust, resilience and unspoken connection between subject and photographer. Each frame invites viewers to encounter the humanity within these cultures not as distant or unfamiliar, but as profoundly relatable.

St Baker employs alternative photographic processes—some of the earliest in the medium’s history—as both a visual and conceptual bridge. These time-intensive methods echo enduring traditions and ancient cultural practices, with imperfections, textures and tonal variations becoming part of the narrative and reinforcing a sense of timelessness and reverence.

The exhibition encourages audiences to engage with these works not simply as images, but as encounters that reveal a shared language of emotion, presence and connection that transcends geography and culture.
