The exhibition will present new artists’ books, multiples and digital prints by Sydney-based artist Peter Burgess.
Opening event: Thursday 20 August 2015, 6 – 8pm
Peter Burgess is an Australian artist and the current Co-Acting Subject Leader in Printmaking at the National Art School, Sydney. Burgess’ works focus on the negotiation of relationships between private and public levels of experience. In Burgess’ work ordinary situations become infused with possibility so that found objects and images are each recognized for their individual narrative potential. Objects and experiences that are normally taken for granted- a parcel tied with string, an old photograph, even language itself- are rearranged, repackaged or recontextualised to take on new and unexpected meanings.
Burgess has shown work in solo and group exhibitions across Australia, North America and Europe, including in ‘Australian Perspecta’, AGNSW, 1983 and ‘Prints and Australia – Presettlement to the Present’, Australian National Gallery, 1989. Burgess was recently awarded the Australia Council residency in London, where he held a solo exhibition. Burgess is the twice recipient of the ‘Fremantle Print Prize’ and is held in collection at the Australian National Gallery, Canberra; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Monash University, Melbourne; Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart; New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; and the Zona Archives, Florence.
