‘Men in Uniform’ focuses on the concept of masculinity; how it is defined, how it can be communicated and how it can be transgressed. The ideas explored in this project stem from a fascination with the ways in which modes of masculinity are communicated, marketed and consumed through fashionable dress. The military uniform has become a symbol of hyper masculinity through its attributed traits of restraint and discipline. ‘Men in Uniform’ is an experiment in material form, attempting to make visible the notions of masculinity, as they have developed in military uniforms. The outcome of this project is menswear collection that will bring into question how military tropes can be disrupted and questioned to create a playful re-interpretation of the military uniform.
