“My current work looks at iconography and language, in particular Arabian (Moorish), Australian Aboriginal, Pacific, Indian and Asian. Street art and graffiti tags are a new phenomenon on this theme and very interesting to investigate. How do global cultures represent ‘mind’? Is it done through language, landscape, or by some other means? Is my interpretation an emergent part of that mind? Is there a separateness of mind?
Characters that represent language allow further investigation into this theme: in some works I create proto sigils that hint at an underlying meaning implicit in their shapes, but are consciously elusive. They evoke the sense of mind that is realised when looking at a foreign language. In other works I reference Indian Sanskrit and Chinese Cao Calligraphy. In some passages I know the deliberate communicated meaning. Others I don’t. It is the unknown mind that I am interested in here.” Sarah Daly, statement extract, 2012.
