Last year I put together a show at the Uni of Sydney’s Verge Gallery, called THE DREAMS OUR STUFF IS MADE OF and asked artists to respond to a science fiction text that was of influence to their work. The show yielded some very different responses in all kinds of media.
Incidentally, the show at WAG, named SPACE JUNK ALERT after a sensationalist Courier Mail headline, has taken on a very different feel from its predecessor. Consisting mostly of Queensland artists this time, the mood has changed, from themes of paranoia, alienation and the inevitable apocalypse to those of alien colonization, the weirdness of wide open spaces and visitations. Considering this, I wonder how the places we live influence our responses to such outrageous, and often incredibly prescient and insightful, themes.
