Iconic Brisbane artist Sue Pickford will be launching her works at Bosz Gallery on Friday 27 March alongside Emeritus Professor Sasha Grishin. The exhibition explores contemporary themes influenced by the philosophical and socio-political themes of her own era, in relation to place, race and culture.
“Through the appropriation of iconology and cultural schemas, I use myths, in order to highlight the universally common origins of the human species; of ancestors who through their myths and legends sought to make sense of the world and the unknown,” detailed Ms. Pickford in her artist’s statement.
On display in New Farm Bosz Gallery, in the heart of Brisbane’s art and design district, Ms. Pickford’s exhibition ‘Mythologies, Icons and Archetypes” will open 23 March – 11 April, and is open to the public.
There will be an opportunity to meet guest speaker, Emeritus Professor Sasha Grishin, from the Australian National University on 27 March between 6 and 8pm. Grishin’s expertise range from art history to religious studies, with an interest in Australian contemporary art.
Grishin has described Pickford as a storyteller, who with “detailed and immaculately worked relief prints, she weaves a narrative, one which in its style and language has the outer semblance of an old master print, but whose inner essence deals with very contemporary themes…”
Pickford’s exhibition, utilising imagery from the Renaissance and Baroque periods creates visually attractive and intellectually stimulating prints where gods, goddesses, heroes and heroines transcend any singular definition of time or place to create order amidst chaos.
Exhibition Opening: 27th March, 6:00 – 7:00pm
