LINK is a series of new object-based works that explore slowness, productive ambiguity, and shared experience. These objects presented as reductive forms will be specifically placed within the gallery space, to encourage us to slow down and take care. LINK invites us to foster this culture and practice of care, and apply the same attention to bodies, gender and difference as we go about our daily lives.
Since 2009, the IMA has had the honour of presenting the Jeremy Hynes Award to an experimental Queensland artist in the earlier stages of their career, made possible by a bequest made by the family of Jeremy Hynes in his name.
In 2019 recipient is Tay Haggarty, who has been awarded $10,000 and will receive mentorship to produce a solo presentation at the IMA. Haggarty was awarded the prize based on demonstrated experimentation, ambition in ideas, and artistic courage.
Tay Haggarty’s practice explores how reductive forms can be used as an open field to reflect upon personal and shared experience. These investigations take the form of collaborations, performances, videos, installations and sculpture. Haggarty uses industrial and ready-made materials that, when arranged within a space, heighten precarious elements through tension and balance. Their work is often minimal and site specific.
Haggarty is a co-director of CLUTCH collective and is one half of the collaborative duo Parallel Park. They completed their Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) degree at the Queensland University of Technology in 2015. They have exhibited locally within various group shows at spaces such as Metro Arts, Outer Space ARI and Box copy, and has had solo shows at Oral ARI, Kunstbunker ARI and Wreckers Artspace. Haggarty has also shown interstate at FELT space in Perth and West Space in Melbourne as well as internationally at the Ildiko Butler Gallery in New York. They were the 2019 recipient of the Jeremy Hynes award.
