The space alien is an immediately recognisable icon of otherness in western popular culture. Alien visitors are frequently depicted as culturally and technologically advanced throughout the science fiction canon but are also frequently shown to be brutal, cruel, and anaesthetic simultaneously. Free from gender, sexuality, ethnicity and social caste, space alien visitors represent the absolute sublime terror of the unknown, devoid of bias or cultural conditioning. The antagonism present in the human-alien dynamic has led to a consistent reading of space aliens in contemporary discourse as unwelcome, unwanted, and unfathomable.
THE ALIEN SHOW features the work of four emerging artists – Charlie Donaldson, Loki Groves, Spencer Harvie and Sally Molloy. Their approach, equal parts humorous and serious in tone, highlights major uses of the space alien motif within contemporary visual culture.
