The third issue of The Maximilian will centre around discussions of art and its relationship to other industries. As a journal we are interested in critical writing that explores the topic from the angles of both art and broader culture, through theory and philosophy.
This idea may be approached from a number of directions. First, art’s increasingly close relationships to other industries such as music, fashion, and film by way of its adoption of comparable mediums, pragmatic forms, or market strategies (by way of celebrity culture and branding, for example). The presence of art within these industries may also be considered, such as the increasing trend for artists collaborating with fashion brands. This may also be approached from the direction which considers the expanding, or even dissolving, boundaries of what art is. Examples of this can be found in recent major exhibitions which show contemporary artworks alongside other historical objects, shown together for their common significance as cultural objects.
Writing may take numerous forms. This includes research-led essays (2000-4000 words in length), conversation pieces, and extended reviews (around 2000 words in length). We also invite and encourage pieces that specifically seek to exploit our online space as a format, such as poetry and artist’s projects.
Applications should include:
- A 250 word outline of your piece defining its subject, main argument, and points of reference in research
- Curriculum vitae
- 2 examples of previous work (as relevant to your application)
