Entering the space at Dumb Dumb, Jefferies’ audience is met with a sort of anti-wonderland, an inverted fairytale, in which the characters — who have, for the most part, emerged from the local urban environment of East Brisbane — take the form of plaster-cast construction weights, image-covered chipboard and casts of the ARI architecture itself. These are, to borrow the term coined by Graham Harman (who Jefferies affectionately describes as “the grandfather” of object-oriented ontology), agentive objects, objects which flex their meant-to-be-ness in this humble space.
