Tom Alberts was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1962. In 1970 Alberts and his family moved to Perth where he later completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in painting at the Western Australia Institute of Technology in 1983. In late 1990 the artist moved to Melbourne, Victoria where he continues to live and work.
In 1999 Alberts received the Australia Council Rome Residency Award in the Visual Arts and Crafts based at The British School at Rome. The residency resulted in his work being curated in the travelling exhibition Academici, an exhibition featuring 18 contemporary Australian artists who participated in the residency between 1999 and 2004.
