Transcendental Plains

Deadline:

REDSEA Gallery

John Waller’s abstract design represent the next step in a pictorial tradition that underpins much of Australian art. After an extensive career in Victoria, this exhibition will be Waller’s first in Queensland, as REDSEA Gallery proudly brings to you Transcendental Plains; an exhibition that will prove Waller’s sophisticated and timeless aesthetic.

John Waller’s colour-dominated fields tap into universal conceptions of the environment. Dusty tracks, outback paddocks, and rural divides all play into Waller’s art as he stretches and flattens these images into a mastered sequences of geometric abstraction.

Inspired by the aerial view from flyovers across the vast Australian outback, his work aims to deconstruct and re-evaluate pictorial elements. Transcendental Plains will highlight this deconstruction as Waller moves beyond mere geometric abstraction and transcends into colour dominated fields. Continuing a discourse inaugurated by Paul Cézanne in the 1880s, Waller’s concepts distils the formal qualities of landscape, creating new environments of verticals and horizontals, improvised organic forms, and of vivid chromatic jurisdiction.

Growing up in Mildura, country Victoria, Waller observed the flat plains and ochre coloured wheat fields that today echo through his work. After completing degrees in Sculpture at RMIT, Waller has gone on to exhibit both nationally and internationally, as well as having artwork in prestigious private and public collections including the La Trobe University Art Collection and ArtBank Australia.

The opening reception will be held on 11th February from 6:00pm – 8:00pm
