Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins presents Warrajamba, an immersive Artist in Residence project that transforms Museum of Brisbane’s Creative Space into an environment shaped by story, material and connection to Country.
The project explores the ancestral story of Warrajamba, the mermaid — a significant narrative passed down through generations of the artist’s family from Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and Mulgumpin (Moreton Island). Visitors are invited to slow down and connect with Country and culture through reflective activities and an evolving installation experience.
Cockatoo-Collins’ work includes a large sculptural installation made from natural materials gathered from Minjerribah, including freshwater reeds, beach hibiscus fibre and shells. These materials reflect the relationship between land, sea and community that underpins the story of Warrajamba.
Visitors can take part in free hands-on making activities, including crafting mermaid or dugong dolly peg dolls using stamps designed by the artist. Throughout the residency, audiences will also have opportunities to see the artist working in the space and to participate in workshops and school holiday activities.
Warrajamba forms part of Museum of Brisbane’s Artist in Residence program, supporting local artists to develop new work while fostering creative exchange with the community.
