The work of Brisbane based artist Alex Gilles draws on transient imagery to produce woodblock prints which fuse the past and present. Alex takes the humble act of carving into blocks of hardwood using processes unchanged for hundreds of years to form detailed prints, anchored in the melancholic. Previously seen as a fringe medium within Australia’s art circles, each woodblock is crafted through a demanding manual process with no… room for error and no ‘undo’ button, each print is unique.
