Saturday 11 August, 9am-12pm

Vieille Branche, 10 Fox St Albion

Shibori describes a traditional tie-dyeing technique used in Japan which dates back to the 8th century. Shibori involves a range of folding, stitching, binding, twisting and compressing of cloth to result in varying resist patterns.

Indigo has traditionally been used for shibori, and is extracted from the indigofera plant. The leaves have been used around the world for centuries in order to dye fibres a range of rich, deep blues.

In this workshop, we’ll show you how to prepare and store an indigo vat, and teach you some basic shibori techniques so that you can make a beautiful cotton scarf to take home with you!

Have something at home you’d like to dye indigo? Bring it along with you! Just make sure it is made from a natural fibre (cotton, linen, silk etc). Vat dyeing can be messy so make sure to wear something that you won’t mind being splashed with varying shades of blue!

All materials provided, including two natural fibre scarves.
