A vital part of making a career as a visual artist is securing grants and funding, as well as residencies and exhibitions. Being able to discuss and pitch your work are crucial skills. In this session get application tips from artists Elizabeth Willing and Daniel McKewen in discussion with Amy-Clare McCarthy, Exhibition Program Curator at Metro Arts and Peer Assessor with the Australia Council.
Elizabeth Willing will discuss how to talk about your work when applying for residencies and grants. She was the Artist in Residence at Metro Arts in 2012, received an Australia Council grant for a one year residency at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin 2014, and in July 2015 she undertook a 7 week residency at HIAP, Helsinki. Elizabeth has been awarded Australia Council Project funding (2016), Freedman Foundation Travelling Scholarship (2013), Australia Council Artstart grant, a JUMP mentoring Scholarship (2010), and the Melville Haysom Scholarship through QAGOMA (2010).
Daniel McKewen will break down how to talk about your art work overall – the structure and the process and importantly, how to position your work for various proposals and opportunities. Daniel has received grants from the Australia Council, been shortlisted for prizes, and also has experience in assessing applications for galleries.
This session will provide you with the top tips for giving your application the best chance of success, as well as specific tips and information about applying for our current Call for Proposals for 2017 Visual Arts Residencies Programs. Following the session you can meet with Metro Arts staff and speak directly to them about your proposal or ask current Artist Run Initiative in Residence, FAKE estate, directors about their experience this year.
