YANNICK BLATTNER aligns Australian cricket and art histories for his upcoming exhibition Contrived Circumstances. Blattner’s paintings interrogate cricket’s colonial past and its impact in defining Australia’s cultural characteristics and masculine ethos. Recreating imagery from the culturally and historically engrained sport, Blattner’s work is laced with ambiguity and visual allegories. His reconstructed and anachronistic cricketing scenarios become absurd and otherworldly, injecting masculine displays of sporting with vulnerability, precariousness, and uncertainty.
