This exhibition collates work which forms part of an ongoing exploration of ideas about surface, depth and material transfer. As a noun, surface, in its general understanding, designates a skin or the outermost layer – a layer, by definition, without depth. As an adjective, extending on the lack of depth, surface refers to the superficial and skin deep.
When considered at a material level however, every surface, no matter how thin, has a thickness or depth which is typified by specific material properties that serve to differentiate it from what lies on either side. The exhibition title Skin Deep serves to bring to the fore questions surrounding the depth of surface and its perceived flatness, despite every surfaces’ material depth. A surface or skin is deep.
