Established in 1972, the biennial Stanthorpe Art Prize is the second oldest art competition in Queensland and is open to both emerging and professional artists and one of the top 10 art prizes in regional Australia. The Stanthorpe Art Prize is open to Australian artists who have the opportunity of winning one of eleven categories, with prizes totalling $50,000, including $22,000 as the major prize.

The categories are: 2D – Painting/drawing $3,500, Print media $3,500, Mixed/crafted $3,500, and 3D – Modelled/carved $3,500, Cast $3,500, composite/assemblage $3,500.

A popular category is the Local Artists prize of $2000 and the Public Choice prize of $1,500. There is a special category to encourage emerging artists with a $2000 prize. The Art Prize committee would also like to encourage young people to continue with their art and there is a youth award of $1500 for artists under 18 years of age.

Artist’s can review the full entry requirements and enter online at the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery website www.srag.org.au. Entries close 16 March 2020. Mediums include painting, textiles, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, photography, glass, sculpture, wood, metal, mixed media & more. In 2018 the major winner was a photograph from Ipswich artist Jason McNamara.

The exhibition will be open for public viewing from 5 June – 29 July 2020 and is free to visit. Members of the public are able to vote for their favourite artwork with the most popular scoring $1500 in the public choice award.
