The part and the whole explores parts, wholes and processes, in particular, the use of repetition as both a visual device as well as a process. These recent works highlight the formal properties of glass beads; their form, texture and geometric qualities, their pattern and repetition, as well as their ability to be assembled and re-assembled in multitudes of combinations.
Paula Dunlop is an artist, designer and maker. Her background is in both fashion and fine art—she works across both disciplines, drawing from embroidery, weaving and garment-making practices to create objects and works on paper with needle and thread. She holds a persistent interest in materiality and making—our apprehension of, and how we engage with, the material ‘stuff’ of the world. She is drawn to the histories and traditions of creative work undertaken in domestic spaces, and the way we conceptualise and engage with quotidian objects and materiality.
Dunlop employs time-honoured and time-consuming construction techniques, preferring to work by deferring to the limitations presented by the material and by deferring to the processes of the form itself: she is led by bead, thread and weave.
