The Queensland Centre of Photography is delighted to have the opportunity to showcase this exhibition at The Maud Street Photo Gallery in Brisbane.
The exhibition is open to public from February 22nd – March 24th, Wednesday – Friday from 1pm – 6pm and Friday – Sunday from 11am – 4pm. Entry is free.

From iconic contemporary architectural, ancient sites of spiritual significance, to the ruins of abandoned cities, Gollings has spent a career revisiting modern and ancient sites to document the built environment. It is rare that we have the opportunity to showcase and profile an internationally renowned and respected artist with such a depth and diversity of practice.’
John Gollings is Australia’s pre-eminent, and most prolific, photographer of the built environment. For the past 50 years he has been synthesising his parallel interests in photography and architecture to explore the cultural construction of social spaces.
From sacred rock art sites and ancient temples, to suburban dream homes, iconic monuments and architectural interventions, Gollings’ catalogue of images provides a remarkable visual history of how humans have chosen to inhabit their world.
The history of the built world is the first major survey of Gollings’ photographic practice and offers a much-anticipated opportunity to appreciate the full breadth of his unique vision. With academic training in the history of architecture, and a professional grounding in photographic practice, Gollings documents and dramatizes architecture with an informed artistic flair. Constantly innovating with photographic technologies, and investigating new architectural subjects with a restless enthusiasm, Gollings’ connoisseurship of the built world is unparalleled.
This travelling exhibition has been made possible with the support of Monash Council, Creative Victoria, the Bowness Family Foundation, the Gordon Darling Foundation, the Vizard Foundation, the Australian Institute of Architects and the QUT School of Design.
This event is part of the Asia Pacific Architecture Forum, an initiative of Architecture Media and State Library of Queensland.
