Sonja Carmichael presents Giibum, Gulayi Murmurings – Story Bags, an exhibition grounded in deep connection to Quandamooka Country.
The exhibition features Carmichael’s exquisite installation Wunjayi Wagariinyai Quandamooka Jagun – Yarabin Ragi, comprising 237 handwoven copper wire birrepi bunbi (little dillybags). Each bag contains elements gathered from Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), including shells, pippies, oyster, banksia nuts, coral, sand, driftwood and grass tree.
These materials symbolise the interconnection between yarabin ragi (sea and bush) and embody stories of Ngumpi (home). As a senior weaver and researcher, Carmichael’s practice passes knowledge to community while also offering critical reflection on the health of land and oceanic ecologies.
Opening Event: Saturday 7 March 2026, 5–7pm
Artist Talk: 4–5pm with Freja Carmichael
