Afghanistan is a powerful photographic exhibition by award-winning photojournalist and author Andrew Quilty, presenting images captured during his time living and working in Kabul between 2013 and 2022.
Curated by Ellie Waterhouse, the exhibition offers an intimate and reflective portrait of Afghanistan during a period of profound political and social upheaval. Quilty describes the work as an “imperfect portrait of time and place”, balancing moments of beauty and devastation while revealing the lived realities of conflict.
Through carefully composed photographs, the exhibition humanises the impact of war, capturing everyday life, resilience and the complex emotional landscape experienced by individuals and communities. Quilty’s work has been recognised internationally, receiving a World Press Photo award, multiple Picture of the Year International awards and nine Walkley Awards, including the Gold Walkley.
Afghanistan is a Museums & Galleries Queensland touring exhibition presented in partnership with Andrew Quilty and curator Ellie Waterhouse. The project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program.
