From Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 July 20, Brave New Worlds will see a series of 40 flags, printed with new works of art, flying proudly along the familiar bright red staircase of Jacob’s Ladder, connecting Brisbane CBD’s Edward Street with Spring Hill.
Turning silk flags into canvases, artists were asked to design a flag for the world they’d like to live in – offering up their vision of what qualities they want in a brave new world to come for hundreds of pedestrians each day.
This installation brings together 20 of Brisbane’s best visual artists: Naomi Blacklock, Joseph Breikers, Man & Wah Cheung, Courtney Coombs, Sam Cranstoun, Ruby Donohoe, Kinly Grey, Tayla Haggarty, Merv Heers, Anna Jacobson, Blake Lawrence, Kiah Reading, Leena Riethmuller, Kali Rose, Alexandra Winters, Melody Woodnutt, Parallel Park (Tayla Haggarty & Holly Bates).

A week after the flags of Brave New Worlds come down, a new world pops up – this time off Edward St, in the laneway down the side of Metro Arts.
A one-day event on Friday 28 July 017, This Frozen Moment is an audio installation showcasing more than 20 of Brisbane’s finest authors, poets, and spoken-word artists. Visitors will enter a heritage-listed laneway lined with suspended origami sculptures; each encasing a small speaker device that whispers a moment of a possible world, to combine as an installation of cascading whispers – a feast for the eyes and ears.
The writers behind the installation were tasked with capturing ‘frozen moments’ – the heart-rending, show-stopping instants that change a life. Writers who have taken up the challenge include local playwright Aleea Monsour who is sharing the stories of Palestinian refugees; Victoria Carless, whose first novel, The Dream Walker, has just been published by Hachette Books; and Regan Lynch, previously published in Archer Magazine. Responding with a short story, poem, or monologue, This Frozen Moment sees new writing shared in an installation that invites all to come in and listen closely.

Brave New Worlds and This Frozen Moment are the brainchild of one of Brisbane’s most exciting performance collectives, The Good Room – the creative minds behind I Want To Know What Love Is, sell-out hit of 2014 Brisbane Festival and 2015 Wonderland Festival. The art installations are their first foray into bringing their trademark visual style into public spaces.
