“From Latvia to Malta, we were mostly children of the displaced, born to migrants on Ngunawaal land, in Canberra. Only fifty years earlier, the local people had been removed, or worse. The past is still close even as it hides behind road signs and billboards.

I have worked with positive and negative because that seems to also address creation and destruction and metaphor more broadly. These works reflect on the bones of contradiction and on the persistence of Europe in our thinking. Duality—the coexistence of difference—has been central to these works about the physical object and the depicted or ornamented as well as the old and new. They are about how we put things together and how we negotiate order and chaos as a means to reconsider where we are now.

If they look bleached and melancholic, I hope you also find something fresh and optimistic here. “ – Bruce Reynolds
