“Watering a Flower” is the latest photographic series by Charlie Hillhouse since returning from Japan. This body of work focuses on the impervious visual language of distinctly Australian settings. These scenes, furnished with the sculptural forms of twisted and refashioned barbed wire, highlight an otherwise inconspicuous aspect of urban locations. Marrying these oftentimes dismissed or ill considered spaces with the overtly impassioned phrase of “Watering a flower from the spray of the waves crashing passionately against a pebble beach,” Hillhouse provokes a reflective, albeit slightly misplaced comedic reading of the minutiae of everyday life.
