Jan Manton Gallery presents AFTERLIGHT, a new photographic series by Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Christopher Allery. Known for his meditative, light-driven imagery, Allery’s practice navigates the emotional and narrative potentials of photography through quiet encounters with place, memory, and light.
AFTERLIGHT emerges from travels through Japan and Australia, where shifting weather, solitude, and cinematic influences inform the visual language of each work. From a self-portrait taken inside a historic Hokkaido photo studio to atmospheric scenes shaped by snow, darkness, or golden hour warmth, the series reflects a deeply personal journey. Each photograph becomes a threshold—an invitation to pause, reflect, and inhabit a suspended moment between reality and reverie.
Allery’s exploration of light as more than illumination—shaping presence, mood, and emotional resonance—threads through both landscapes and portraits. His works are grounded in a sense of place yet feel dreamlike, drawing from personal memory and filmic atmosphere to create quiet, layered worlds.
In 2024, Allery was a finalist in the CLIP Award for Contemporary Landscape Photography and the Percival Photographic Portrait Prize. He holds degrees in Visual Art and Film from Queensland University of Technology.
