Gallery of Modern Art

To celebrate the centenary of the 16mm gauge film format and in response to the QAG exhibition ‘Living Patterns: Contemporary Australian Abstraction’, ‘Colour Box’ brings together a selection of contemporary and archival 16mm experimental films to highlight the format’s long-standing relationship with abstract cinema.

The program is presented across eight interconnected strands – Early Abstractions; Boogie Doodle; Geometric Visions; Algo-Rhythms; Me, Myself and (the letter) I; Articulating Images; Rainbow Diaries and Inner and Outer Space. A selection of short films by Barkindji artist Kent Morris will also be shown on loop on Sundays in the QAG lecture theatre.

Program curated by Victoria Wareham, Australian Cinémathèque

Additional writing by Rupert Levien.
