The closing chapter of an extended body of work investigating gendered engagements with the [mostly male] modernist canon, It’s Complicated utilises humour and explores the dynamics of romantic relationships as methods and metaphors for critique. For a single weekend, Courtney takes a final look at her fervent relationship with the history of Western modernism, and considers whether it is the end of the affair.

Courtney Coombs is a Brisbane-based artist, whose works utilise photography, moving image, installation, performance, sculpture and found objects. Her practice engages with the heteronormative, patriarchal structures of both the art world and society more broadly. She is a founding Co-Director of the artist-run initiatives, No Frills* (2008-2010) and LEVEL (2010-current). Courtney graduated from Queensland University of Technology in 2008 with first class Honours, and is currently in the final stages of a practice-based PhD at the same institution. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, in venues such as Casino Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Villa Merkel (Esslingen), Roji to Hito (Tokyo), Artspace (Sydney), Bus Projects (Melbourne), and QUT Art Museum (Brisbane).
