Institute of Modern Art

Drawing on her wealth of experience within the global art world, Stephanie Rosenthal will explore the presentation of performance art in public institutions, focusing on new performative strategies and formats, as well as the complementary role of the digital archive.

Notwithstanding its longer history, including Dada, Situationism, and the ritualised events of the pluralistic 1970s, performance has recently reasserted its place and importance in art. Once occasional, and often sequestered to external places, performance has now entered the institution, sometimes in all-encompassing events. The presence of live art inside institutions, with its unique process of production, presentation and distribution, raises new issues and challenges for the art museum.

Rosenthal joined the Hayward Gallery as Chief Curator in December 2007, having previously worked at the Haus der Kunst in Munich for more than ten years. She curated the acclaimed exhibition Paul McCarthy: LaLa Land Parody Paradise which toured to Whitechapel Gallery, London in 2005. She has recently unveiled Ana Mendieta: Traces, the first retrospective of this artists work in the UK, and is imminently opening Dayanita Singh: Go Away Closer. Currently, she is one of three curators coordinating the first Columbian Biennial, which is due to open in 2014.

Rosenthal has contributed essays for books and periodicals on a wide range of contemporary artists and has been part of international advisory boards and symposia about modern and contemporary art since 1996.
